New breastfeeding gadgets and gizmos: Nice, necessary, or a nuisance

Time-frame: 60 minutes

E-CERP: no

Breastfeeding has become more and more commercialized. New gadgets and gizmos are flooding the market with a seemingly endless array of products claiming to ease breastfeeding and improve lactation. Many of these breastfeeding aids have little research or clinical evidence to back up their claims. Many lactation personnel wonder if these products will truly help their breastfeeding patients and clients or are they just a waste of money and unable to address breastfeeding challenges. This presentation will discuss some of the more recent breastfeeding aids that are not as well known or advertised such as the bibi ruler, wearable bioimpedance sensors that monitor milk intake, flange sizing tools, bili cam, biliscreen, neoSCB (Scleral-Conjunctival Bilirubin) measuring tool, test strips to measure alcohol content in breastmilk, breast massage devices, MyLee Smart Sensor, and others. Whether these devices are nice, necessary or just handy is still uncertain.
