GLP-1 receptor agonists (such as semaglutide and tirzapeptide medications) are rapidly changing the landscape of maternal/parental health, with more postpartum and breastfeeding parents using these medications for weight management and metabolic health. WIC staff are increasingly encountering families with questions about milk supply, appetite suppression, nutrition adequacy, and infant feeding behaviors – often without clear guidance.
Participants will gain a practical, evidence-informed understanding of how GLP-1 medications may impact lactation, maternal/parental nutrition, and infant feeding. They will leave with real-world counseling strategies to support families in a way that protects breastfeeding, honors autonomy, and avoids weight stigma.
Objectives:
· Identify 2 potential impacts of appetite suppression and rapid weight loss on milk production and maternal nutrition
· Recognize 2 common concerns and scenarios WIC staff may encounter when supporting families using GLP-1 medications
· Apply practical, client-centered counseling strategies that support lactation while maintaining a non-judgmental, weight-inclusive approach
