Breastfeeding duration is sub-optimal, even where the overwhelming majority of mothers initiate breastfeeding. Research on the impact of prenatal education, birth practices and immediate, uninterrupted skin to skin contact between mother and infant reveal multiple simple ways that obstetricians and midwives can support the normal process and prevent early problems that cause half of mothers to abandon breastfeeding in the first postpartum weeks.
