Tongue Tie and Frenotomy

60 - 180 minutes
CERP

Tongue tie, or ankyloglossia, is increasingly being recognized as a treatable cause of breastfeeding difficulties. This session will review the anatomy and embryology of tongue tie, the clinical presentations, diagnostic workup and the frenotomy procedure. After attending this session you will be better equipped to screen infants for potential tongue tie, diagnose it when present and refer appropriately for treatment. Also, you will come away with a deeper understanding of the mechanisms by which tongue tie causes breastfeeding difficulties and be able to better educate parents about this common condition.

I could tailor this to various time frames and venues. A 60 minute talk would be an overview, whereas in a longer session, I could show many pictures and videos. For the really long sessions, I would plan some interactive activities so that the participants can activate their prior knowledge about tongue and get their own questions addressed.

The NICU Infant: An Overview of Newborn Intensive Care

30 - 90 minutes
CERP

NICU graduates have been through a lot of experiences that affect every aspect of their being. Their families' worlds have been changed in ways that are difficult to imagine. Many of these experiences potentially affect breastfeeding success. Professionals who work with these babies and their families after discharge should be aware of some of the common procedures and experiences that NICU families go through. This session will provide an overview of NICU care from a neonatologist's perspective. This information will help you help your patients process their experiences and move from the "NICU mentality" to a healthier and less fraught breastfeeding relationship.

I can tailor this in many ways. If you want just late preterm issues, I can do that. If you want me to include very low birthweight babies, critically ill infants (e.g., ECMO). I can do an overview or concentrate on specific areas of interest, such as ECMO, parenteral nutrition, NEC, etc.
