About the Speaker
Christy Jo is an educator with over twenty years of experience. She developed the Grow Our Own Lactation Consultant/IBCLC Prep Course in 2009. She has been instumental in starting a California Breastfeeding Coalition, Breastfeeding Cafes, Mom2Mom Support Groups and Breastfeeding Clinics. Her service in public health affords her opportunity to reach and teach multitudes with varying backgrounds. She is an accomplished photographer. Some of her breastfeeding photographs have been published in her children's book, Mommy Feeds Baby. Christy Jo was selected by DONA International as the recipent of the 2011 Phyllis Klaus Award. Official Bio for Brochure
Christy Jo Hendricks, IBCLC, CD(DONA)
Christy Jo Hendricks has experience as an elementary and secondary teacher, administrator, public speaker, author and health educator. She pursued a teaching career and was content in the business world until she and her husband started a family, and her desire switched from CEO to MOM.
Christy Jo became passionate about helping other women breastfeed after the birth of her third child. She found herself in desperate need of assistance and discovered how elusive lactation help could be. Her desire to empower and advocate for other women in similar circumstances, led her to become a doula and an Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant. In the spirit of collaboration, Christy Jo created the Grow Our Own Lactation Consultant/IBCLC Prep Course to educate and train individuals. Her course has been instrumental in "growing" hundreds of new Lactation Consultants throughout California. Christy Jo's main goal is to help other women reach theirs. She also recently wrote and illustrated a children's book, Mommy Feeds Baby which serves to normalize breastfeeding through chldren's literature.
Christy Jo currently provides lactation education through the third year of Grow Our Own, attends births, facilitates lactation clinics, and advocates for women in Southern California, where she lives with her husband and three children.
Presentations
This speaker is pleased to provide presentations on the following topics to professional and parenting conferences. Presentations on other topics may be available upon request and subject to sufficient development lead-time. (For CERP topics, required paperwork will be provided promptly to meet CERP deadlines.)
Western Culture and Breastfeeding
This short, humorous presentation shows how society, media and marketing impacts breastfeeding. The predominant view of the female breast is contrasted wtih the nurturing side of the mammary gland. Stark contrasts are depicted through slides of current advertisements and responses to breastfeeding articles in mainstream press.
This is a great presentation for breastfeeding coalitions or as a filler between longer sessions. Audiences have given this lecture excellent reviews and have requested repeat sessions at conferences.
Human Milk for Human Babies
This course is designed to expose the learner to a brief history of breastfeeding and how formula became prominent in the American culture. The impact of marketing on infant feeding is touched on as well as the influence of hospital policies. The lecture also demonstrates the difference between artificial human milk and breastmilk and what risks infants are placed in when human milk is witheld. A brief lesson in breast and infant anatomy is presented followed by early breastfeeding and initiation including the use of Mother Kangaroo Care.
This course is ideal for an overview of infant feeding choices leading up to assessing the dyad following birth and initiating breastfeeding.
